Halflytely Bowel Preparation Instructions
ONE WEEK PRIOR TO YOUR COLONOSCOPY
• Our office will call in your prescription for your bowel preparation to your pharmacy. • The following medications must be stopped one week prior to you colonoscopy:
Aspirin and aspirin containing products NSAIDS such as Aleve, Advil, any anti-inflammatories (Take Tylenol if needed) Vitamins, iron supplements, herbal supplements • If you are taking any blood thinning medications such as Coumadin / Plavix, please follow the instructions for stopping these medications as instructed by your physician.
Continue taking all other prescribed medicines.

• If you are a diabetic, follow the instructions for any changes in your insulin coverage or medication
on the day before and day of the procedure as ordered by your physician.
Please call the Access Department @ 978-834-8210 to pre-register for this procedure anytime
Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm.
THE DAY BEFORE YOUR COLONOSCOPY

• You may have a light breakfast before 9:00am.
After 9:00 am, drink only clear liquids for the rest of the day. You are encouraged to drink lots of
clear liquids, as this will prevent you from becoming dehydrated.
Clear liquids include:
- Apple juice, white grape juice, white cranberry juice (NO PULP)
- Water, clear broth or bouillon
- Coffee/tea - BLACK ONLY (without milk, cream or non-dairy creamer)
- Jell-O, popsicles, sport drinks (NO RED, ORANGE OR PURPLE)
- Clear carbonated drinks like 7-up, ginger ale or sprite.
- No alcohol products.

Continuation of the day before your colonoscopy….

IF YOUR PROCEDURE IS SCHEDULED BEFORE 12:00 PM, PLEASE
FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

At 3:00pm take 1 bisacodyl tablet with water. Do not chew or crush.
• At 5:30pm add drinking water to top of line on bottle, cap bottle and shake to dissolve the
powder. The reconstituted solution will be clear and colorless. Do not add anything else for flavoring other than the flavor packets provided with your Halflytely preparation kit.
At 6:00 pm begin drinking the Halflytely solution. Eight ounces every 20 minutes until
the bottle is empty.

Be sure to drink all the solution. If you have severe discomfort or distention, stop
drinking the solution for a while or wait longer between drinking each glass until the
discomfort goes away.

IF YOUR PROCEDURE IS SCHEDULED AFTER 12:00 PM, PLEASE
FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

At 4:00 pm take 1 bisacodyl tablet with water. Do not chew or crush.
• At 5:30 pm add drinking water to top of line on bottle, cap bottle and shake to dissolve the
powder. The reconstituted solution will be clear and colorless. Do not add anything else for flavoring other than the flavor packets provided with your Halflytely preparation kit.
At 7:00 pm begin drinking the Halflytely solution. Eight ounces every 20 minutes until
HALF of the bottle is empty.

You will drink the remainder of the solution tomorrow morning (the day of your
procedure) at 7:00 am.

Be sure to drink all of the solution. If you have severe discomfort or distention, stop
drinking the solution for a while or wait longer between drinking each glass until the
discomfort goes away. Diarrhea will continue for about 1 hour after you finish the
solution.

THE DAY OF THE COLONOSCOPY

• NO LIQUIDS FOUR HOURS PRIOR TO PROCEDURE
YOU WILL NEED TRANSPORTATION ARRANGMENTS:
You will need someone to drive you home. You cannot walk home. A taxi is permissible only if you are accompanied by a responsible adult.
• Leave valuables at home. Wedding bands may be left on.
BE SURE TO TAKE ALL OF YOUR PRESCRIBED MORNING MEDICATIONS AS YOU
USUALLY DO WITH A SMALL SIP OF WATER, UNLESS INSTRUCTED OTHERWISE
BY THE PHYSICIAN.


Please bring inhalers and diabetes medications with you to the hospital if applicable.
• After your procedure, instructions will be written down prior to you going home. You may also

You will need to arrive at the Anna Jacques Surgical Day Area 45 minutes prior to your procedure time unless otherwise instructed.
